AV Hospital sets visitor restrictions due to flu season

LANCASTER — Due to the severity of the current flu season, hospitals across the country are taking efforts to help reduce the spread of the virus. Effective immediately, Antelope Valley Hospital (AVH) is implementing the following visitor restrictions:

  • Children under 14 may not visit patients.
  • Anyone with flu-like symptoms (i.e., coughing, sneezing, fever or sore throat) will not be allowed to visit patients.

“We are focused on providing the best quality of care in an environment that is safe for our patients, staff and visitors,” stated Jonathan Truong, M.D., medical director for AVH’s infection control. “These additional safeguards will help ensure our patients are not being put at an increased risk for flu or other respiratory illnesses.”

The new visitor guidelines are expected to remain in effect until the end of March, which is typically when flu season ends.

The hospital has seen a 27 percent increase in visits to the emergency department since November, largely due to flu-like symptoms. Earlier this month, AVH opened a “Flu Zone,” a designated treatment area for patients with the flu.

To help reduce the spread of the flu virus, Dr. Truong recommends the following tips:

  • Anyone coming into the hospital with flu or cold symptoms should wear a mask.
  • Visitors should practice good hand hygiene, including using hand sanitizer located throughout the facility, before and after patient contact as well as after touching public surfaces (i.e., door handles, elevator buttons, chair armrests, etc.)
  • People should exercise good “cough etiquette” by covering their coughs/sneezes, followed by proper hand hygiene.

More information released in Palmdale triple homicide, arrest warrant issued for murder suspect

Wanted Palmdale Triple Homicide

PALMDALE –  An arrest warrant was issued for a 54-year-old man suspected of brutally killing three family members and their dogs inside the victims’ Palmdale home.

James “Todd” Brown “lived on the victims’ property in a trailer for approximately two years while doing odd jobs for the victims, as well as in town,” according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

“It appears that the suspect and victims got into a dispute that escalated to murder,” according to a sheriff’s department news release.

The bodies of 52-year-old Richard Gardner III; his father, 78-year-old Richard Gardner II; and his father’s wife, 56-year-old Pepper Gardner, were discovered around 3:50 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13, in the 1100 block of West Avenue N-12, according to the sheriff’s department.

“The three victims were stabbed, suffocated and beaten to death in their home. Their dogs were also found beaten to death,” sheriff’s officials said in the news release.

A family member asked for a welfare check of the home and upon entering the residence, deputies found the body of a man, then two more victims in another room.

Brown, who had initially been called a person of interest in the case, is white, 6 feet tall, weighs 265 pounds and has brownish gray hair and brown eyes. He might be driving a silver 2002 Toyota pickup truck with a camper shell and the California license plate 42198C1.

Brown has family members and friends who live in the Inland Empire and Antelope Valley, according to the sheriff’s department.

The change of Brown’s status from person of interest to wanted suspect came as a vigil was held Wednesday for Richard Gardner III, a deliveryman who was well-regarded in the community.

Brown is considered dangerous and should not be approached. Anyone who spots him should call 911. Anyone with any information that could help investigators can also call the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.

Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers by calling (800) 222-TIPS.

Lancaster man gets 23 years for sexually abusing young female relative

LANCASTER – A Lancaster man was sentenced to 23 years to life in state prison for sexually abusing a young family member, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced Friday.

Adam Anthony Orona, 27, will also be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Orona was sentenced Thursday in connection with his Jan. 17 no contest plea to one felony count each of oral copulation or sexual penetration with a child 10 years or younger and committing a lewd act on a child, according to Deputy District Attorney Myle Phan.

Orona sexually abused the girl at his home over the weekend of March 24-25 last year, the prosecutor said.

Orona was arrested several days later by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies and has remained behind bars since then.
